Solo mide.

Budget spreadsheet of  production costs for audiovisual and sound works

Time is often thought of as a universal measure. However, within an economy, no second has the same value for everyone. Living in the world has a continuous cost. Rent accrues even in absence. Devices depreciate while resting on the table. Electricity sustains what remains powered. It is not necessary to consume to spend; merely existing is enough.

If all artistic production requires time, then the very possibility of producing a work depends on the material conditions that make sustaining that time possible. Before being an abstract resource, time is economic infrastructure. Its price changes depending on who inhabits it.

This piece proposes a calculating instrument. Based on the artist’s life situation and the tools they have available, the system translates three pesos, the total production budget of this call, into a single unit of measurement: the exact duration of a strictly audio or video piece that that artist can produce.

The apparatus does not measure art. It measures the artist.

The device is subject to its own rule. To produce this piece within the budget an artificial intelligence tool was used. That tool did not accelerate thought nor change the essence of the work; it only sped up execution. The idea remained the artist’s. What was made cheaper was the time needed to carry that idea out: not having to spend hours writing the formula, building the spreadsheet, or polishing the text. Without that reduction of time, under this premise and these conditions, the work would have been impossible to produce.

There is, however, a variable the system cannot incorporate: thinking time. It does not begin when work begins nor end when it finishes. It cannot be timed or billed precisely. It remains outside the formula as the only datum impossible to quantify. The instrument calculates seconds, cents, depreciations and consumption exactly. Everything finds a place within the spreadsheet, except that which originates the work. Thought remains irreducible. That absence constitutes the limit of the instrument and, at the same time, the fissure in the system that makes it possible.

Second part

The form functions as an open invitation to other artists. Each participant enters their own living costs and obtains the exact duration of the piece three pesos allow them to produce.

From that result, each artist makes a strictly audio or video piece whose only condition is to respect that exact time.

The works form a collective archive of unequal durations. They are exhibited together, each accompanied only by the time that was assigned to it.

No explanation. The apparatus does not opine. It only measures.
